Internal Sensations of the Breath
“As we explore ourselves more intimately as breathing beings, we discover that the internal sensations we have of our breath and ourselves have many different densities and levels. We can discern, for example, solid, earthlike sensations; liquid, waterlike sensations; and gaseous, airlike sensations. We can experience the dense, contracted sensation of pain, the fluid sensation of ease and pleasure, and the expansive sensation of joy, love, and appreciation. We can also experience the spacious, open sensation of inner freedom–freedom from the chronic tensions and contractions of our self-image that manifest in our muscles, bones, and tissues. In this state, we begin to experience our breath and our sensation of ourselves as transparent and without boundaries.”–from my book “Free Your Breath, Free Your Life”

Just Let Yourself Be Breathed
Your breathing can calm your mind, gladden your heart, and relax your body. Let yourself be breathed now by something much larger than your little self. No effort! Just intimate sensation as you follow the exhalations and inhalations of the life-force occurring by themselves in the expanding spaciousness of presence. Let yourself come to rest in that presence.
Two Natures
I am at home sitting at the kitchen table at breakfast time eating some oatmeal. I sense the spoonful of oatmeal in my hand and follow it visually as my hand brings it toward my mouth. As the oatmeal disappears into my mouth, the visual sensation gives way to an intense sensation of taste. I chew the oatmeal gently, savoring the taste that now fills my awareness. I sense how the oatmeal gradually moves down my esophagus and into my stomach, until the local sensation of movement disappears into the sensation of my whole body. At that moment, something separates in me, and I experience my entire body, thoughts, feelings, and sensations inside my awareness, which, paradoxically, seems somehow behind what I usually take to be myself. Time itself disappears into a spacious sensation that I can only describe as I Am. The I Am reveals itself as two natures, separate, yet somehow one–the silent awareness that I fundamentally am, and everything that fills it, including Dennis with all of his disparate thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
The Living Mystery
I do so love to ponder and even quote the wisdom of the great mystics, teachers, and thinkers, but when I “stop” for a moment and take a good look at my situation I realize that it is also helpful to express in my own words the best of my understanding arising from my own life. The intention to speak truly without knowing where the words will take me is a journey from and into the living mystery. Perhaps you will join me on this journey.

The Spaciousness of the Air You Breathe

Sense your body becoming the spaciousness of the air you breathe. Let each out-breath return you to your own inherent emptiness.
The Struggle to Awaken
The struggle we need to undertake for awakening is in large part the struggle to see the many ways we constantly lie to ourselves. Are you willing to see and acknowledge your own self-deception and lack of openness at the very moment they occur in your daily life, or do you believe that you are somehow above all of that?
